The Indian Road rules that is recorded under the name, ‘Rules of the Road Regulation,’ came in effect in July 1989 and had remained the same till date. These rules and guidelines apply to all the Indian drivers (it includes people driving any class of vehicle), while on the road to make sure that the traffic is safe and organized. Disrupting, transgressing or disrespecting any of these rules is a severe offense according to the traffic police rules of a region as well as the Indian Motor Vehicle Act.
Implementation of these traffic rules can reduce the number of road accidents considerably. These laws are mandatory. Anyone who is caught disrespecting/not following the traffic rules can be given out challans in their name which will prompt them to internalize the law. Penalty payment and legal troubles are considered to be effective punishments. A systematic list of the possible crimes and their respective penalties is categorized below:

Few Things Drivers in India Must Know:
The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, Section 185, pronounces that any violator arrested for drunken driving for the first time will be charged with a fine of 2,000 rupees or may face imprisonment up to three years or could be charged with both the offenses.
Further, Section 20-2 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, also enables the concerned authorities to invalidate the licence of a drunken driving offender for six months.
If a person is found breaking the rule for the second time and it is charged under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, Section 185 again and the court has the authority to revoke the driving licence permanently.
If an offender is caught for overspeeding, his/her driving licence can be revoked for not less than three months under Section 19 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
