Since the country is witnessing a high growth rate of vehicles and extensive urbanization since the last few years, the road safety levels have taken a major hit. Most often than not, it is the young population of the country that becomes a victim of these horrific road accidents hence causing substantial loss of life and productivity for the nation. To reduce the number of road accidents in the country, the government has made the rules for acquiring a DL in this country more stringent.
A license not only lets people drive on the public roads, but it also acts as an address and identification proof.
There are two types of Driving License that can be acquired by an individual in this country who fulfills the eligibility criteria for applying for a DL:
The temporary license is also known as the Learner's License and it is given to people who wish to learn to drive on the public road in this country and the permanent license is given to people who have passed the standardized tests and capable of driving on public roads.
Applicants who wish to make a driving license application in the Indian capital can opt for one or more type of vehicle they want. Mumbai offers driving license for a range of vehicle types, as specified below:
Light Motor Transport Vehicles
This license is given out to people who drive transport and commercial goods carriers, and this section is further classified into Light Motor Vehicle (Passenger) like cabs, jeeps, delivery vans and auto rickshaws.
LMV-NT: Light Motor Vehicle Non-Transport
This includes vehicles that are privately owned by individuals like SUVs, Hatchbacks, etc.
Medium Goods Vehicle
This category consists of vehicles such as trucks, tempos and other goods transport vehicles.
Medium Passenger Vehicle
This class of vehicles includes transport such as minivans, tempos and larger commercial vehicles.
Heavy Goods Vehicle
This category of transport includes vehicles like trucks and large vans, that are meant to transport goods.
Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle
This category lists vehicles like buses, road roller, etc. that are used for commercial purposes and public transport.
For applying for a DL in Mumbai, you must meet the following requirements:
The applicant must be 18 years old for Light Vehicles and the individual must be 21 years old to get a license to drive a transport vehicle.
An individual between 16-18 years old can get a license for two-wheelers that do not exceed a capacity of 50cc.

You will be redirected to a fresh page.
Select Apply Online > Learner’s License.

The steps for applying for a Learner’s License are as follows:
Filling the details of the applicant.
Upload the necessary Documents.
Upload your Photograph and Signature.
Book the driving test slot that is convenient for you.
Make a payment of the fee.
You can download the application from some of the websites and then present it in the RTO later before they take the test.
You must also submit additional documents in original at the RTO before you take the test.
Be present at the RTO or the Learner's License test facility to take the Learner's License test according to the slot that you have selected.
If you are not accustomed to the method of filing an online application for Learner's License you can easily apply for a Learner's License right at the RTO office. You can learn the steps given below to know how to apply for a Learner's License at the RTO(through offline mode).
You will be required to procure either Form 2 that is for the application of Learner's License with passport photographs or Form 3 that is meant for Learner's License application along with photographs. These forms can easily be downloaded online or they can be procured directly from the RTO office.
Fill out the application form fully and attach photographs wherever it is necessary. Attach documents pertaining to proof of age and address. Visit the RTO for your area and submit the application form in the office. On the same day, you will need to schedule a Learner's License test by choosing a slot of your preference.
You should be present at the Learner's License test facility on the date and time that you had selected earlier. After passing the test, the Learner's License will be sent to your registered address.

If an individual has lost his/her Driving License or wishes to apply for a duplicate Driving License, he/she can do so by submitting an LLD form to the local RTO. You can follow the steps which are described below to apply for a duplicate DL in Mumbai.
Procure the LLD from the nearest RTO or download it from the Maharashtra transport official website.
The applicant will then be required to submit the passport sized photographs and necessary documents.
If the applicant has filled out Form 7 to apply for a duplicate DL, then he/she can pay a fee of 40 rupees.
The applicant will also be required to provide the original copy of the DL while applying for a duplicate copy.

If the license is due expiry, it is important to apply for a renewal 30 days before the expiry date.
If someone is applying for a renewal 30 days after the expiry, a new DL is issued. The RTO charges a fee of 250 rupees for the renewal of license 30 days after the expiry date has been completed.
IDP or International Driving Permit is issued to people who already own a DL and people who plan on staying abroad for a stipulated period. An IDP form is filled duly to apply for an IDP in Mumbai. In the IDP form, the applicant has to mention the details of the stay in the foreign country such as the duration of stay, purpose of visiting the country and the details of the countries that the applicant plans on visiting.
