People who own a vehicle must be aware of the importance of the RC book or the smart card. It is the Registration Certificate (RC) which proves that your vehicle is indeed registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). RC books were more common earlier whereas Smart Cards were introduced in 2014. These microprocessor chip-enabled cards contain the state-specific logo, hologram, etc., to provide advanced security features and to also make sure that this card cannot be replicated illegally. The Government of India has mandated that it is compulsory to carry a copy of the RC book or the smart card whenever someone is driving a vehicle. The smart card typically contains the following information on it:
Registration Number
Registration Date
Model Number
Engine Number
Chassis Number
Type of the vehicle
Colour of the vehicle
Seating Capacity
This is undoubtedly a crucial document. But what should people do if they lose the smart card?
There is nothing to be worried about. As long as someone knows the procedure well, it won't be very difficult to procure a duplicate smart card. However, it is necessary to have all the required documents in place before applying for a duplicate smart card.
Things you need to do for obtaining a duplicate RC card:
Register a complaint with the nearest police station by providing detailed information about how and where you lost the RC card. Mention the vehicle's registration number along with its model name and number, chassis number, engine number as well as your name and address on a Stamp Paper worth Rs.20.
Get a challan that says ‘RC Card Lost’.
Visit the official website of the concerned RTO and download Form 26. Fill up the form.
A NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the concerned bank is required for vehicles purchased on loan, in case the loan is still active.
You need three copies of Form 26, which must carry the endorsement of the vehicle registering authority.
Attach the photocopy of vehicle insurance, PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate, and your driving license.
Pay the required fee for the duplicate smart card and collect the receipt.
The ID proof and other attached documents should be taken to the RTO (Assistant Regional Transport Office) for verification and attestation.
Approach the Superintendent of the RTO and submit the receipt.
Once the Superintendent verifies and approves the application, you will get an acknowledgment slip.
This slip will contain the date on which the RC card will be issued.
