If someone has bought the vehicle recently, then he/she must have to receive a temporary registration number from the dealer. However, seven days after purchasing, it is mandatory to get a permanent registration number. A temporary vehicle registration number is valid only for a month. The vehicle must also be registered by the RTO in the region when the vehicle owner bought the vehicle.
The vehicle owner can follow the steps described below to acquire a temporary registration number for a vehicle:
The vehicle owner firstly needs to fill up Form 20.
The form must be submitted to the RTO authority.
The form must be submitted to the dealer who deals in the sale of new vehicles given that the owner is registered by the Transport Commissioner.
Fees applicable to the temporary registration of a vehicle is based on Central Motor Vehicles Rule, 1989.
The necessary documents should be submitted to the registering authority for temporary registration of the transport.
Form 20 (Application for Temporary Registration)
Sales Certificate of the vehicle (Form 21)
Road Worthiness Certificate (Form 22)
Insurance Certificate that states all the insurance details of the vehicle
Address proof of the vehicle owner
A certificate stating that the Pollution emitted by the vehicle is under control
Copy of PAN card or Form 60/61, whichever is applicable for the vehicle owner
If the owner of the vehicle wants to extend the temporary registration of the vehicle, then he/she must submit the below-mentioned documents:
Form 20(The application for the temporary registration)
Sales Certificate (Form 21)
Road Worthiness Certificate (this certificate states that the vehicle has cleared all the tests that are necessary for it to be operational on the road) this certificate can be submitted through Form 22
Insurance Certificate
Proof of Address
Pollution Under Control Certification
If the vehicle is a trailer or semi-trailer, then the owner will also be required to submit an approval copy from the STA
The sales certificate through Form 21 must be provided if the vehicle was previously operational in the army
