Driving a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler has been viewed as a symbol of freedom for a long time and it has now become a vital life skill. In times where riding your vehicle has become a necessity, owning a driving license also becomes essential. A Driving License is a formal document which has been issued by the Regional Transport Office which certifies that the holder is qualified enough to drive a motor vehicle. According to the Indian Motor Vehicle Act 1988, if an individual doesn't have a valid Driving Licence, he/she can't drive on the public roads.
Each state has its process in India, the procedure of testing and the criteria for applying varies from state to state. Andhra Pradesh's state transport department has made the procedure for applying for a DL very convenient.
In Andhra Pradesh, the motorists are eligible to acquire two types of licenses:
Permanent Driving License and Learner’s License.
The individual must hold an LL or Learner’s License before he/she applies for a Permanent Driving License. Learner’s License in this state is valid for six months and the applicant must apply for a permanent Driving Licens before its expiry. This kind of permanent DL is issued to people for driving bikes without gear like scooters or mopeds. The candidate should be at least 16 years old to procure a Permanent Driving License for a bike without a gear.
This class of permanent DL is issued to people for driving a light motor vehicle which includes bikes and cars. To procure this sort of driving license in Andhra Pradesh, the candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
Individuals who want to drive carrier vehicles such as private service vehicles, trucks, taxis etc must procure a permanent Driving License for transport vehicles. In Andhra Pradesh, DL for such vehicles is issued to people who are at least 21 years old.

The applicant must procure Form 4 (the application form for acquiring the license to drive a vehicle which can be acquired from the official website of Andhra Pradesh Transport or the local RTO.
You must own a valid LL to be able to apply for a permanent license.
The individual also must present a medical certificate which has to be signed by a medical practitioner who has been authorized by the government.
If you are applying for the license of a transport vehicle then you must submit Form 5.

For individuals who want to make any modifications in the Driving License, he/she can follow the steps described below:
You can request for corrections in your DL in the RTO where you applied for your DL.
You must provide your marriage certificate and other relevant documents for the change in name.
You also must produce the original copy of existing DL.
Application for change/modification in DL can be made by getting a non-judicial court fee stamp to the licensing authority.
The applicant also must present the application form for changing the information on the original DL and these changes should be approved by the RTO.
After the application for modification in DL has been approved, you will be receiving a receipt that can be used as a temporary DL.
The updated DL will be sent to your address through post.
For conducting the driving test, Andhra Pradesh Transport Department provides four distinct tracks:
Applicants can choose the location which is nearest to them.
The applicants will need to bring their vehicles for the driving test depending on the class of the vehicle that was selected while applying. The applicant must undergo the test in the presence of a vehicle inspector who can assess the driving skills of the applicants. The motor vehicle inspector must verify whether the applicant is equipped to procure a license for driving on the public roads. After the driving test, the applicant must take another test which can test his/her awareness of road safety and traffic signals. If the applicant fails the test, he/she can reappear for the test within seven days.
It must be noted that an applicant will not be allowed to appear for a test without a seat belt for a four-wheeler and a helmet for a two-wheeler.
Usually, a Learner’s License in Andhra Pradesh has a validity of six months. A permanent Driving Licence for motorcycles which don't have gears has a validity of 16 years and for LMV the validity is 18 years. You can get your expired license renewed from the nearest RTO office by following the procedure described below:
Collect the application Form 9 from the nearest RTO office or download it from the official website of the state transport department.
Along with the application form, the applicant will be needed to pay the necessary application fee and the documents for identification and address proof. You also must submit two recent passport size photographs.
Medical Certificates as mentioned in Form 1 and Form 1A should be presented as well.
The RTO can approve the DL renewal form and the new Driving Licence will be sent through post to the registered address.
If an individual has lost his/her Driving License or wishes to apply for a duplicate Driving License, he/she can do so by submitting an LLD form to the local RTO. You can follow the steps which are described below to apply for a duplicate Driving Licence in Andhra Pradesh
Procure the LLD form from the nearest RTO or download it from the state transport official website.
The applicant will be then required to submit the passport-sized photographs and necessary documents.
If the applicant has filled out Form 7 to apply for a duplicate Driving Licence, then he/she must pay a fee of 40 rupees.
The applicant will also be required to provide the original copy of the Driving Licence while applying for a duplicate copy.
To acquire an international driving license in Andhra Pradesh, you can follow the steps described below:
To procure an IDP or International Driving Permit, the applicant must submit a filled IDP where he/she acquired the DL.
Along with IDP, the applicant will be required to produce necessary documents and recent passport size photographs.
A nominal fee of 1000 rupees also must be paid by the applicant while submitting the IDP form.
The application is approved and verified by the RTO and the IDP is sent to the registered address.
How frequently should someone renew his/her Driving Licence in Andhra Pradesh?
After the expiry of the DL, the individual must renew it every five years. However, for transport vehicles, the renewal must be done in every three years.
What can I do if I fail the DL test?
If you have failed the DL test then you can retake it in the next seven days. If a candidate fails the test three times consecutively, then they must retake the test in the next 60 days.
