The Constitution has made provision for the establishment of an institution that is responsible for directing elections and ensuring that the electoral process is conducted lawfully. This institution is known as the Election Commission of India.
Since India is a vast country with twenty-nine states, each state has its own Election Commission for increasing the functional efficiency. These state-level Election Commissions are responsible for conducting elections in each state. Citizens above the age of eighteen are eligible for voting in this country. Individuals who wish to participate in the voting process must possess a voter ID card or EPIC. These voter ID cards permit the elector to vote at local, state and national level elections.
