Every Indian citizen above the age of 18 is eligible for voting, irrespective of their religion, caste and economic status. Indians who are eligible to cast their votes can apply for a voter’s ID card and participate in the election process.
Apart from allowing the individual to participate in elections, voter ID card can be used as a valid proof of identity and address. Since voter ID is an important document, it has to be kept safe and updated. There could still be errors in the voter ID which can be corrected by submitting an application form to the electoral office. The process for correcting address in the voter ID card has been simplified by the ECI which makes it easier for individuals to update/make corrections in their addresses.
You can correct the address mentioned in your voter ID card through online/offline modes. The offline mode of making corrections in the address is by visiting the electoral office and the online mode is by visiting the official website of the election commission of India.
You will be required to submit the application form and attach the required documents to prove your correct address. The details on the application are verified and you will be receiving the voter's ID card in the updated address.
Below described is the process for making corrections in your address:
Visit the nearest Electoral Office.
Collect a copy of Form 8. You can also download and get a printout of Form 8 from the official website of CEO of your respective state.
Fill in all the information and attach a copy of your documents like your identity and address proof.
Submit the form along with the address proof. A reference number will be issued to you in the electoral office. You may track the status of your application through this reference number.
The details mentioned in your application is verified and after successful verification, you will be receiving a notification from the electoral office.
Collect your corrected voter ID card from the electoral office.
Voters can now correct their address from the convenience of their home. Follow the process described below to correct the address in your voter ID:
Visit the official website of CEO of your state.
Select Form 8 from the list of forms.
Fill in details like personal details, constituency, voter ID number etc.
Upload the supporting documents as per the guidelines; proof of address in the form of electricity bills, telephone bills, passport, Aadhar card, Bank passbook, etc. must be submitted.
After uploading the documents, submit the form.
A reference number will be generated that can be used to track the status of your voter ID card in future.
Electoral officers will verify your application based on the documents and the information provided.
You will receive a notification if the verification process is successful. You can collect your voter ID at the changed address.
You can make corrections in your voter ID card by submitting Form 8 in the Electoral Office along with the documents that have your correct address.
Form 8 is available in all the electoral offices and you can also download it online. It can be downloaded from the official website of the Electoral Officer's website. While the applicant is filling up the form requesting a change of address, he/she will be required to mention his/her name, district, state and constituency. The applicant will also be required to provide documents that prove your updated address.
