The multiparty system in India has encouraged the conception of a plethora of political parties in the state, district and national levels. Elections are considered to be an integral part of democracy and it is necessary for the citizens of the country to have an identification proof stating their eligibility to cast their votes. Voter ID is an identification proof that can be used to prove the eligibility of an individual to cast their votes. The Voter ID card also helps the Election Commission of India to avoid any malpractices when it comes to the election. The voter ID card was introduced by the Election Commission of India.
Eligible voters can apply for their voter ID either online, offline or through semi-online methods.
The citizens can follow this method to apply online for a voter ID card:
Click on National Voters' Services Portal.
Click on 'Apply online for Registration of New Voter ID'.
Fill up the required details. Fill in all the 4 sections of Form 6.
Click on Submit.
If you wish to finish the details later click on Save and fill up the details according to your convenience.
If you wish to change any details provided by you, then you can click on Reset.
Click on Upload to upload the scanned copies of all the required documents.
Upload your photograph along with the documents.
You can check the status of your Voter ID application by using the reference number.

Form 6 gathers all the information about the applicant and it is divided into sections. You will be required to choose your state/province before starting to fill out the application and finally select the constituency from which you're applying.
The sections of online voter ID are described below:
The first section contains information about the applicant's details. The first column requires you to fill in your name in English and your regional language. Furthermore, you would be required to provide your gender.
Next, you will be required to fill in your date of birth. You will also be required to fill the details of the village or town that you reside in. After filling up the details of the village/town that you live in, you will be required to fill out the name of your spouse/parents and the relationship that you share with them. This information must be mentioned in both English and your regional language.
The next section deals with the particulars of your address. You will be required to fill up your complete address under this section. It is compulsory to mention the name of the town/village that you stay in. After this, you will be required to provide the pin code for your address. You can also choose to fill in your email address or phone number in this section.
The third section requires the applicant to fill up details of family members who are registered voters in an electoral constituency. You will be required to provide the name of the person along with the relationship that you share with them and their voter ID number.
You will be required to provide supporting documents in this section like documents regarding your address proof and your identity proof.
The fourth section is a declaration from the applicant which states that the applicant is a citizen of India and he/she has not applied for voter ID card previously in any other constituency.
The declaration has two options:
The first one states that you have not applied for voter ID in any other constituency.
The second declaration states the preference of an individual for the place in which they wish to be registered for the electoral poll along with the date.
You will be required to select one of these options.
After filling up all the details, you can click on submit.
If you wish to finish completing the form later, you can click on the ‘save’ and complete the form according to your convenience. You may click on the reset button if you wish to erase all the information provided.
