It is decided in the General Elections that who will remain in power for the next five years. It will take place around April-May 2019. The winners of the election will be constituting the 17th Lok Sabha. A total of 543 seats are supposed to be contested for by the candidates of different political parties.
The Republic of India has a federal form of government. Elections are held at local, state and national level to elect the representatives for the country. Lok Sabha members can elect the Prime Minister of the country who can act as the head of the government. These elections are conducted by the ECI and the Lok Sabha members are chosen through general elections which take place every five years. The legislative assembly of different states and union territory electoral college choose the Rajya Sabha members.
India is the largest democratic setup in the world. With as large as 29 states and 7 Union Territories, the assembly elections take place on a regular basis.
The last Lok Sabha elections were held in the year 2014, and the NDA government led by Narendra Modi came to power. The next Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held in 2019

2019 Indian general election is scheduled to be held in between 11th April and 19th May in seven phases to form the 17th Lok Sabha. The votes will be counted on 23rd May, and the results will be declared on the same day.
The 543 MPs will be elected from the single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. The President of India will nominate additional two members from the Anglo-Indian community if he believes the community is under-represented.
The eligible voters must be Indian citizens, at least 18 years or older, and should have a valid voter identification card issued by the ECI (Election Commission of India). People who are convicted of electoral or other offenses are barred from voting.
Earlier, there were speculations in the media that the Modi government might advance the 2019 general election to counter the anti-incumbency factor. However, they retrospected on the past blunders of advancing an election made by the Vajpayee Government and decided to conduct the election as per the regular schedule as announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on 10th March 2019.
The election schedule was declared on 10th March 2019, and with it, the Model Code of Conduct came into force. Here are the dates as scheduled

Legislative assembly elections of Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir are scheduled to be held later in 2019
Jind (Haryana)
The by-poll was made necessary after the death of Indian National Lok Dal legislator Mr. Hari Chand Middha in August 2018. Elections were held on 28th January 2019. A BJP candidate, Krishan Lal Middha, won the Jind Assembly seat in Haryana by a margin of 12,935 votes.
Ramgarh (Rajasthan)
Election to the seat was canceled due to the death of the BSP candidate. Then the elections were held on 28th January 2019. A Congress candidate, Shafia Zuber, won the Ramgarh assembly seat of Rajasthan by defeating the BJP candidate with a margin of 12,228 votes.
