A passport is reissued generally after its expiry, 10 years from the date of issuance. One can check the expiration date on the first page of the passport under the "Date of Expiry" section. Applications for passport reissue can be made up to 1 year before the date of expiry as well as within 3 years after expiry. Passport reissue is not the same as passport renewal and the two must not be confused. Passport renewal is applicable only to special circumstances such as Short Validity Passports (SVP). For the reissue of a passport, a new passport is issued while the old passport is canceled and returned. However, if there is any active visa on the old passport, the same will continue to be valid and may be used until its expiry.

The process of reissuing a passport is quite simple. An applicant must visit the official website of Passport Seva. Applicants can also go to a PSK in person and make the application. The processing fees have to be paid and then an appointment must be scheduled. The process is described in detail below.
The initial step in applying for passport reissue through the Passport Seva web portal asks the applicant to open an account in the said web portal. If one doesn't have an account already, here's how one can create one:
Go to the official website of Passport Seva by visiting www.passportindia.gov.in/
The left side panel of the page has an option to login - existing users can sign in using their id and password
New users must sign up by clicking on 'New User? Register Now' box.
After entering the required information, one may create a username and password.
An activation mail is sent to the email ID provided, which will help in activating Passport Seva account.
After creating the account successfully, the applicant has to follow these steps to apply for the reissue of passport:
Sign in to the Passport Seva account using the id and password.
Click on the link that says ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ and select the Re-issue option.
Fill out the application form with all the required information - either fill up and submit the form online; or alternatively download it, fill it out and upload it back for submission.
Verify all the details in the form before submitting it.
After filling up and submitting the form, you should pay the required fee and then book a time and date slot to visit the PSK for further procedures. The fee payment can be done online using SBI internet banking or credit/debit cards of any bank. The fee can also be paid offline - generate a challan, print it, walk into the nearest branch of SBI and make the payment. After successfully completing the payment, the web portal will let you book an appointment slot in the following way:
Select the “Schedule appointment” option after making the payment.
Check for the status to display the message “Success”.
Proceed to book an appointment.
Choose a convenient slot and the passport office nearest to you.
The appointment will be scheduled the moment you confirm the slot.
Alternatively, this procedure can be done offline by collecting the application form from the passport office and then scheduling an appointment with a PSK over the phone.
