Passport Reference File Number is basically a unique number provided to all applicants when they apply for an Indian passport. This number helps an individual in tracking the status of their passport application.
It is an alphanumeric code consisting of alphabets and numbers in addition to the year of the passport application. The code starts with the letters of the name of the area from where the application was made and ends with the year of application. For example, if someone applies for a passport in Madras in the year 2018, the Passport Reference File Number will start with MASW and end with 18. Six more digits will be present between the alphabetical code and the number. The Passport Reference File Number consists of 12 digit unique numbers.
There could be certain rare cases in which there might be a delay in the issuance of the passport. The delay could either be due to a problem with the documents or some other problem. In such cases, the applicant will receive the intimation and updates through this code. Every applicant awaiting a passport may use this number to find out the status of their passport application. Applicants can check the status and then visit the passport office to sort out any problem regarding their passport application. This also gives the applicants a clear estimate regarding when they can get their passport.
This number is provided after the applicant applies for a passport, pays the fee for the passport and submits the application for the passport. The number is generated only after the successful submission of the application. It is imperative that this number is kept safe. It acts as an important tool to check the status of the passport application.
