Passport is one of the most important documents issued by the government of all countries. The document not only certifies the passport holder’s identity and citizenship but also entitles the passport holder to travel to foreign countries.
An application for an Indian passport requires several supporting documents. Here is a comprehensive list compiled by mymoneykarma to inform you about the documents that you might have to submit in order to avail of a passport.
When you wish to apply for a fresh passport, you may apply for a normal or tatkal application. Here are the various documents you might need to submit under the three categories - adult, senior citizens, and minors.
Documents required for applying for a Passport under Adult & Senior citizen categories:
Address proof - Any one document from the following list can be submitted:
Passbook of an active bank account which contains a photograph.
Rental agreement.
Election Photo ID card.
Certificate from the Employer on the letterhead of reputed companies.
Proof of Gas Connection.
Electricity Bill.
Income Tax Assessment Order.
Water bill.
Landline or Postpaid mobile bill.
Age proof - Any one document from the following list can be submitted:
Birth certificate (from the Registrar of Births and Deaths).
Birth certificate (issued by the Municipal Corporation).
If the applicant is an orphan, the declaration from the Head of the Orphanage or Child Care Home on the official letterhead confirming his/her date of birth.
Driving license.
Election Photo Identity Card.
PAN Card.
Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
Present or ex-government employees may provide copies of their Service Record or Pay Pension Order (for retired government servants) duly attested by the officer or in-charge of the concerned Ministry or department.
Policy Bonds that are issued by the Public Life Insurance
School leaving certificate or Secondary certificate containing the date of birth.
Minor applicants need to provide the following documents while applying for a fresh passport:
Copies of the first and the last page of parent’s passport.
Any of the address proofs of parents.
Birth certificate or any of the other documents that work as age proof from the list mentioned above.
One may apply for a reissue of his/her passport due to a variety of reasons. In case of a reissue, the passport number changes and the applicant gets a new booklet. The documents required the issuance of PCC or Police Clearance Certificate depends upon whether the applicant has a different present residential from the one that is listed in the existing passport. In case it is the same, then the applicant must submit the old passport in original with the self-attested photocopy of both its first and last two pages, including the ECR/Non-ECR page and the page of observation (if applicable).
In case the present residential address is different from the one listed in the existing passport, then the applicant must submit documents to prove the present residential address over and above the other regular documents as mentioned below:

Rations Card
Diplomatic passports are special passports issued to diplomats, who always travel on official government work or to those Government officials who are posted abroad. The following documents are required during the application process of such documents.
Official identity card of the applicant.
A certificate issued by the Head of Office.
Political or PMO clearance.
An Official Request Letter provided by the Forwarding Officer.
PMO or Political Clearance Certificate.
A printout of the online application form.
Copy of identity card.
Other necessary documents like age and address proof.
Parents may apply for the passports of their minor children by furnishing the following documents:

A declaration confirming the particulars that are provided about the minor.
