Anyone who wishes to travel overseas requires a passport. A passport is an official document issued by the Indian government. It permits the passport holder to go abroad and also identifies the individual as a citizen of that country. Apart from being a travel document, a passport is also used as an identity and address proof. The official authority of a country usually issues it after conducting stringent checks.
While applying for a passport, a number of categories and subdivisions are available that individuals can apply under. Passport for retired government officials is one of these categories. As per the existing passport norms, retired government officials applying for a passport are entitled to certain privileges granted as a recognition of these individuals’ service to the nation during their time of service.
Retired government officials applying for a passport may avail of the following benefits:
Post-Police Verification passport: All retired government officials can receive their passports before police verification, provided that they submit their Pension Payment Order. All such applicants will receive their passports, and the police verification will be conducted later. It considerably cuts down the waiting time.
Fewer documents to be submitted: Retired government officials are required to submit less number of documents as most of their details are already recorded in the system. For instance, if a retired government official applies for a tatkal passport, he/she must submit either a Pension Payment Order or a Verification Certificate along with an address proof, birth proof, and the standard affidavit only. On the other hand, all other tatkal applications, require many documents for submission to expedite the application process.
Retired government officials applying for a passport can refer to the website of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for a more comprehensive list of the required documents and also the application procedure.
