Users can calculate the surrender value of their policies using a simple formula:
Surrender Value Factor x [Basic sum assured (No. of premiums paid/Total no. of premiums payable) + Total bonus received]
Let us follow a simple example to understand the parameters involved. Let's consider an LIC Jeevan Anand policy with surrender value applicable after three active years. The surrender value is equal to 30% of all premiums, excluding the ones paid in the first year of the policy term with vested bonuses. Accident benefits are also excluded from calculating the surrender value. Bonuses are considered as additional cash values that are paid at the end of policy the tenure or in case of the policyholder's death.
Now let us assume that the LIC policy started in 2010 with a 15 years term. The sum assured is Rs.4,00,000 and the yearly premium amount is Rs.30,192. If the policyholder has made just five premiums so far, then the surrender value will be:
30% x (5 x 30,192) + Final Bonus in today’s term.
