National Pension Scheme was introduced by the Central Government and came into effect from January 1, 2004. It was made available to all the citizens of India from May 1, 2009. The NSDL was appointed as the Central Recordkeeping Agency for NPS by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). The duties of the Central Recordkeeping Agency are:
- To carry out record keeping, management and customer service for all members under NPS.
- To issue a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) to each member and maintain the database of every account.
The objectives of NPS are:
- To provide old age income
- To provide reasonable market returns on long-term accounts
- To extend old age security covering all citizens
National Pension Scheme can be joined by any citizen of India between the age of 18-65 in two ways:
- By visiting the Point of Presence-Service Providers (POP-SP): Any individual, who is interested to register with NPS, can get PRAN application form from any of the POP-SP and fill with all required information and documents.
- After filling it, the form can be submitted at the respective POP along with required KYC documents.
- A receipt number will be provided by the service provider to track the application status after the submission of the form. The status of the PRAN application can be tracked through the provided receipt number by clicking on the following link.
- The submission of application form will be complete after contributing the first amount (minimum of Rs 500) along with the NCIS (instruction slip), mentioning the details of the payment made towards the PRAN account.
- Through eNPS: Here, the subscriber can register online by visiting the NPS website through Aadhaar, PAN card, and bank details.
- Registration through Aadhar: To use this option, you must have your aadhar card linked with a registered mobile number, so that KYC can be done through OTP method.
- Registration using PAN: You can undertake this option only if you have a PAN card. Here the KYC verification will be done by the bank you chose during the registration process. The name and the address which you provided during registration should match with the bank records.
Steps for Linking Aadhar Card with NPS:
- Log on to your NPS account.
- Under ‘Update Details’ section, click on ’Update Aadhar/Address details’.
- Click on ‘Add/Update Aadhar’ option.
- Enter the required details of Aadhar.
- An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
- After the completion of OTP verification, your aadhar card will be linked to NPS account. In case there is any mismatch in the details of aadhar and NPS account, the application will be rejected.
