In the Union Budget 2017-2018, under “Other measures in the Financial Sector”, it was announced by the government that steps will be taken for linking aadhaar with individual demat accounts. Due to this directive, SEBI has also directed all the service providers to advise the agents about linking of demat accounts owned by individual investors for ensuring the effective implementation of the budget.
As per the guidelines, agents or depository participants were advised the following:
- Participants may advise the customers to mention the Aadhaar number in Know Your Client (KYC) application form (Part I- Form 9 of Business Rules) submitted at the time of account opening, highlighting them the advantages of it.
- Participants should encourage the clients or investors for linking their demat account with Aadhaar card.
- Participants should discuss NSDL's online facility while talking to clients, which are specifically for the purpose of updating Aadhaar numbers directly in demat accounts.
- Clients can also provide written requests along with the copy of Aadhaar card for updating Aadhaar details in the demat account.
- Participants need to ensure that the correct Aadhaar number is updated in demat account by using online verification of Aadhaar through UIDAI or through a self-certified copy of Aadhaar card. Once Aadhaar updation is done, the participant or agent needs to communicate with the client via email, letter or any other mode of communication suitable for the client.
Aadhaar linking with demat account is easy and can be achieved in these few simple steps mentioned below:
