Aadhaar Virtual ID

VID or Virtual ID is a 16-digit random number that can be used for authentication on temporary basis, in the same way the Aadhaar card can be used. VID can be created from UIDAI portal. Being a digital ID, VID is safer to share than Aadhaar as it can be generated multiple times and remains valid for just one day. The VID can be created if the user's mobile number is registered with UIDAI database as an OTP code is required for the process. Moreover, the VID number will be received on the registered mobile number. There are various services where Aadhaar is mandatorily required and can be replaced with VID for authentication purposes, such as:

1. For opening a new bank account.

2. For availing government subsidies.

3. For applying for tatkal passports.

4. For buying the new insurance policies.

Steps of generating VID using UIDAI portal:

1. Visit the official website of UIDAI.

2. Under "Aadhaar Online Services' navigate through the listed links of "Aadhaar Services' section and click on "Virtual ID (VID) Generator'.

3. Enter the Aadhaar number and the captcha code displayed on the screen, and press "send OTP' button.

4. An OTP will be sent on the registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and select "Generate VID' option.
