The online facility for customers was introduced by the Income Tax Department in 2003. NSDL and UTIITSL were given by the Government to provide an electronic interface to the PAN application facility. Any modifications or correction in PAN or applying for a new PAN can be applied through these websites. Online application is one of the easiest and convenient ways to apply for PAN since it needs very less time to finish the procedure of online application through these portals and is efficient and time-saving.
NSDL and UTIITSL have a list of rules and guidelines that can help the applicants to understand the procedure of applying for PAN online easily. The entities who are eligible for applying for PAN are: individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, Non-resident Indians, companies, Limited liabilities organizations etc. Based on the entities applying for PAN, the procedure can be divided into Indian citizens and foreigners. While Indian citizens are required to apply for PAN by filling up Form 49A, foreigners are required to fill up Form 49AA to apply for PAN. However, the process of applying for PAN online can be segregated into two methods: through the NSDL website and through the UTIITSL website.
The applicant can apply online for a new PAN card by filling Form 49A.
Steps to fill up the online application:
The PAN card generally reaches the applicant's residential address within 30 days after the documents and acknowledgment receipt are verified. It's important to note that the print-out of the acknowledgment slip and other documents need to be submitted to the Income Tax Department.
If your PAN card is lost or misplaced, you can re-apply for a PAN card. To apply for a new PAN card in case of loss or misplacement, you need to fill out Form 49A and the procedure to submit the application for new PAN is the same as the procedure to apply for a general PAN card. Your identification and address proof is required to be attached to the PAN application along with the request for issue of new PAN card. To avoid rejection of the PAN application for re-issuing of PAN card you need to provide the exact same name as the previously owned PAN card.
If the PAN card issued to you has any mistakes, you can apply for correction in the PAN by logging into NSDL. You might even wish to modify the details on your PAN card if you've changed your name after marriage or if there are printing mistakes in your PAN card. The correction/modification of PAN card requires you to fill up the details exactly in the same way as the general application of PAN.
UTIITSL is an authorized agency that has been allocated the job of processing PAN applications by the Income Tax authority of India. The reason behind having separate agencies like NSDL and UTIITSL to process PAN is because PAN has become a mandatory document in many official procedures, so the volume of people applying for PAN is also high, the process would become reasonably tedious for the Assessing Officers and Income tax Authority alone to handle the large issuing number of PAN card.
The steps for applying for a new PAN card through the UTIITSL website is described below.
Tips to fill application for new PAN:
Online Application for Correction/Modification of PAN Details by UTIITSL
If the PAN card issued to you has any mistakes or you wish to modify any details that you provided when you applied for PAN previously, you can fill the PAN application form to request for any modifications in the PAN details. After you've filled up the form correctly, take a print-out, provide the required documents and send it to the nearest UTIITSL office.
You need to tick the boxes in the form that require modification, before filling up the application for new PAN and pay the amount required for applying modifications in your PAN. Along with the application form, required documents and challan, you need to give a proof that you are an existing PAN user. You can take the print-out of your e-PAN to do so.
The two main ways to make any modifications in PAN is through the NSDL and UTIITSL website. These are the only two companies who are authorized by the Income Tax Authority to process any reprint or make any changes in the PAN.
A few websites can also act as facilitators for PAN application. These websites collect all your data and documents and submit it to NSDL and UTIITSL. However, charge a certain amount of fees for handling the PAN application process.
