A number of measures have been introduced by the Ministry of External Affairs to minimize the time and effort put in for applying for a passport in India. The Ministry of External Affairs has launched an application that could help the applicants to upload necessary documents and avail passport with ease. Copy of the documents required to be submitted while applying for passport are: PAN card, Voter ID and an affidavit that proves that there are no criminal charges against the applicant. There is a round of police verification after the applicant has applied for passport through the online portal.
Earlier it took the applicants a minimum of twenty to twenty five days to avail passport, now it can be done within a week's time due to the online portal introduced by the Government of India.

No. It is not mandatory to submit the original documents to apply for an urgent passport. You can provide the copy of your Aadhar card, Voter ID and an affidavit stating there are no criminal charges against you to apply for a passport. However, you'll have to show your original documents during the police verification.
