UAN is a 12 digit unique number issued by the Indian Ministry of Labor and Employment that helps people in controlling their single/multiple EPF accounts. A UAN is associated with an employee working in an organization. An individual is allocated a new PF account number each time they change their job and join a new organization. Multiple PF accounts make PF withdrawal cumbersome and confusing. The UAN connects multiple IDs associated with an employer. A UAN also makes the process of PF withdrawal easier by connecting all EPFO accounts of an employee.
UAN is a centralized system for tracking and transferring the PF accounts of employees. The benefits of UAN are multifold.
1. UAN facilitates a quick and easy transfer of PF from one EPF account to another.
2. Employees with a valid UAN ID do not need attestation from their employers for their PF withdrawal.
3. With the introduction of UAN system, any employee's identity can be verified and established with the EPFO.
4. UAN helps EPFO track every employee's job changes.
5. UAN allows any employee to view their PF status, download their passbook and forms and file EPF claims.
6. Employees can instantly check their EPF balance through their UAN ID online or through SMS alerts.
EPSO provides unique UAN numbers for all employees who contribute to PF. So far, 41.7 million subscribers have received their UAN numbers. You can get your UAN ID in the following way:
1. If you are seeking a UAN ID, you first need to submit your KYC documents including an ID proof and address proof. You should provide the following documents:
a. Identity proof like PAN card, AADHAR card, or Passport
b. Address Proof like ration card, driving license, or voter ID card
c. Your bank details like your account number and IFSC code of the bank.
2. Once you have submitted your documents, your employer will need to verify your KYC documents. Post verification, your ID will be linked to UAN by your employer.
3. Once this is done, you should register on the UAN website. Doing so would need the following details:
a. Mobile number
b. Member ID provided by your employer
c. UAN ID provided by your employer
Once you fill in the details, you will get an OTP on your cell. After entering the PIN, you need to fill in further information like your date of birth and your father/husband's name. After this, you can access your updated EPF passbook.
You can log in to the EPF website using your UAN as username and your password. After logging in, you can:
1. Download the UAN card and passbook;
2. View your PF linking status and list all member IDs;
3. View PF transfer claim status, file a transfer claim and view system-generated transfer claim status;
4. Edit your personal details including mobile numbers and email ids;

Once your employer has generated your UAN number, it has to be enabled through the EPFO website. You can follow the steps below to activate your UAN ID:
EPFO has introduced several measures for quick settlement of claims. One of the criteria is linking AADHAR with UAN. Doing so can help in submitting claims without an attestation from a previous employer and not needing to provide evidence to the EPFO for partial withdrawals.
You can link your AADHAR number with your UAN through EPFO website "epfindia.gov.in." This facility was introduced in 2017 to go paperless and increase the number of online claims. You can link your AADHAR with UAN in this way:
1. Will my UAN change if I change my job?
If you have already been allocated a UAN, you just need to provide the UAN on joining a new employer, and then they will make you a new member ID which can be linked to your UAN. The UAN allotted to you remains the same throughout your career.
2. What information does my UAN card contain?
Your UAN card contains your UAN number and other necessary information. The card displays your photo and details in the front, and the last 5 member IDs and the contact details of EPFO helpdesk in the back.
3. How do I connect the old PF accounts with my UAN and transfer them?
Once your UAN is linked to your new EPF account, you can transfer your previous accounts online.
4. Can I be allotted two UANs? If so, how do I validate a UAN number?
You can be allotted two UANs because of possible confusions during UAN submissions to your previous and current employers. In such cases, you must contact the EPF helpdesk and mention both your UANs. After proper verification, your previous UAN will be blocked, and the current one will be activated.
