What’s worse than getting late for your office or even to an important meeting at work? Perhaps your bike or car was not working properly, or that you were involved in a traffic violation. During such times, you can be in trouble if you do not have enough money to pay the fine.
The good news is that traffic police in some Indian cities have introduced the facility to pay with debit and credit cards. Thus, one can enjoy cashless transactions in case of traffic violations. This is certainly a huge relief. This initiative is a part of the government’s process to introduce a cashless economy.
Traffic police in the top Indian cities have introduced the PoS or Point of Sale machines for the payment of traffic violations. After the demonetization in India, police in many cities said they encountered traffic rule violators escaping with the excuse of not being able to with cash. After such instances, police became stricter, and started to take custody of the violator’s vehicles till the amount was paid. This again led to problems for many, for instance office goers. Thus, it was seen necessary to have a cashless transaction facility for violators. The government now has fully supported the policy in these cities to introduce this measure.
Traffic police officers carry these mobile challan devices. In case of a traffic violation, a challan is generated by the machine against the vehicle’s registration number.
The challan tells what the fine amount is, and this is sent immediately to the contact number and email ID of the offender.
On getting the challan, the offender pays by debit or credit card, or by other electronic means.
This is possible by swiping the card on the machine.
As this is a security aspect as well, these devices work in the same principal as the machine used by retailers. The payment process is highly secure, and data is not compromised.
When you swipe your card on the machine, you need to key in your password.
There shall be two receipts generated, one for you and one for the police.
No extra amount shall be charged.
This process is more efficient and safe. Paperwork is largely reduced. This shall enable the creation of a nation-wide database which shall be of use to the police department to keep track of repeat offenders.
Digital data shall aid in the validation of documents like driving license and motor insurance. Transparency is increased due to this digital e-challan.
With this measure, there shall be more security for people on the road.
